There are so many things to like about this story, but what lingers with me the most are the strong characterizations Browne gives us. Browne doesn’t write stock characters. She writes about fully-fleshed people, and that makes their actions resonate in the most interesting ways.
Without being too vague about it, I find this especially true about Carrie, the protagonist, who makes decisions about herself and her situation that feel authentic and real, especially toward the end of the story when she’s trying to understand how she “should” act versus what she wants. The actions and decisions made by Carrie feel very real to me.
